in today times with the internet as a world wide communication system it is.. but before the internet you don't rly needed to know more than one language because the only time you maybe needed another language was when you go to vacation.. but even then you don't really needed to speak the language because you could cheat while being there (hand signals etc). so yeah.. today with the internet etc. you at least would need to speak english (in the near future too chinese / japanese.. it's growing and growing^^)

In most Western countries, yes, although schools taught foreign languages way before the internet was a thing, so many people had to be able to speak at least a bit of some other languages (at least that was the case in the Netherlands, because we’re quite a small country)
in germany they tried to teach us french for 1-2 years.. but the teacher did a really bad job at it & because we didn't had much lessons, we don't rly got the syntax / concept in our brain. a few months after stopping, i didn't was knowing a single word french anymore. today it's like i never learned a single word. and because i didn't had a use case for it (like for the internet to communicate with most people i meet there).. i didn't really used french & forgot like everything. with english it was different.. we had english like every day for 1-2 hours and we really learned much. and because i could use it as a teenager in online games, to read stuff online etc i learned words etc. by myself at home while on the internet so i could communicate more with people around the world.. after i had the basic syntax in my brain from school, i learned the rest by myself because we only learned basic stuff in school you could not really use to communicate much.. but now i know english "okay"

Yeah, that’s the cool thing about a lingua franca like English, but the “problem” is that the native speakers of that lingua franca never have to learn another language, which again seems so strange to me and I feel kinda sorry for them, because multilingualism has so many cognitive benefits, not to mention the fact that learning languages is hella fun, and, with the help of the internet, not at all difficult to start doing.

well, we had a project at my school where we had french pen pals from a french school. the teachers basicly forced us to do that. after like a year we visited their school, did visit their home etc.. and they visited us too. we did try to learn them a little german (they learned it at school)..but i didn't really liked the character of my pen pal.. he was like a little child with adhs.. he was really annoying & didn't even did let me go to the toilet without following me. as far i liked the idea of this project.. it was pretty annoying there... really hot without being able to drink, no fresh water etc.. really weird school :/
