What’s ironic about it?

It’s actually not that ironic. BMW’s actually get pretty decent mileage in general through the years and are relatively clean. They don’t really advertise it because that’s not what they are selling the car on, even if it is a feature. For comparison, a 454hp the M4 gets about 25mpg freeway as tested. The Dodge Challenger RT makes about 100hp less and is also rated for 25mpg freeway. The M4 gts turned the same lap times as the Porsche Carrera Gt which gets 16mpg highway. The M4 uses more fuel than say a Toyota Prius, but the Prius doesn’t have anywhere near the performance of the M4. As far as apples to apples as a “sports touring car” the M4 does very well at being “green” for what it is. A modern emissions controlled diesel truck is far cleaner than an older model, but still dirtier than a Prius. But a Prius can’t haul a semi trailer either. So for what it is- a modern diesel truck is green compared to alternatives that do the same thing.

My diesel weighs 8000 lbs and has a 3500 lb cargo capacity. I can tow 17,500 lbs. The Prius weighs 3100 lbs and has a cargo capacity of 900 lbs including occupants. The newest Prius can tow a maximum of 1600 lbs. if I had to move 7 tons of feed 50 miles I could tow a single 3500 lb trailer with all 7 tons on it at once and consume 5 gallons of diesel fuel. The Prius would have to load 1000 lbs on a 600 lb trailer and drive that 50 miles 14 times (and back 13 times) traversing 1350 miles to accomplish the task. How mush fuel would it burn in the process?

Exactly. Each vehicle has a purpose. You can’t compare a Prius to a Diesel Truck to a Sports sedan as though they are the same thing. Each has a purpose they are optimized to. A fleet manager hauling gravel isn’t comparison shopping those cars next to a Peterbuilt, and someone commuting 100+ miles a day to and from an office job and hauling nothing but a squash racket on the weekend probably isn’t looking at the F250 superduty. You can compare them to vehicles with similar capabilities and segments, to past vehicles, and looking at other sporty vehicle of similar performance or target market, the M4 is pretty efficient.
