In the top picture, the thumbs on the hands are facing up. If they were actually holding themselves the thumbs would be pointed down.

If you look closely, they twist their arm so that the thumb is on top.
Edit: I'm an idiot and forgot how arms work, son't like deleting comments so this is just a memorial to my idiocy.
