Why are they throwing them away? Hygiene concerns? (And do other countries have activities for kids in restaurants?? Or is education still a thing and can kids just sit and eat like the human beings they are?)

In Germany they don't do this generally but sometimes they hand out small coloured pencils (around the size of IKEA pens, maybe smaller) and they take them home

Its easier to just throw them away and set out another box than it is to sort them out and keep them.

They're normally in several smaller bits of crayon.

I hope that the melting process is enough to sterilize the crayons.

It’s probably not a good idea to be breathing in the fumes from the melting of crayons
