Wow, that's rude. I mean, it's good that he's honest and lets you instead choose someone who really thinks of themselves as your friend, but the way he said it... Let's just say he could've expressed the sentiment (or lack thereof I guess) a bit better.

He could've said something like "You should instead choose someone who will appreciate this opportunity more because I feel like we're not close enough for me to really appreciate it" instead of just going straight up "I'm not your friend, buddy"
