I remember when I was like 12 and helping the neighbour's little girl (she was like 5) design a Barbie on a computer game. She finished her first three to her satisfaction and started over yet again and started picking the exact same skin tones, eyes, etc. So I asked her "why don't you do one of these ones (the darker skin tones etc) this time?"
'
"No."
'
"Why?"
'
"Because."
'
"Because why?"
'
"Because they're ugly."
'
Keep in mind her parents were the nicest people in the world, the dad was a firefighter constantly doing volunteer stuff with all sorts of people, and there was no chance in the world they'd encouraged this kind of thinking. I just remember sitting there feeling a bit dumbfounded by the whole thing and telling her "that's not very nice."
