Has never left suburbi, because most of the things she found weird in the market aren't uncommon, at least not in grocery stores in any ethnicly diverse areas. And where else would people hang laundry to dry? It's not like they have backyards.
Having spent half of my childhood in Thailand and Cambodia, I can confirm it's pretty much the same there XD

I've seen these softshell turtles once at a fancy business dinner in Shanghai and it looked soo gross, little turtles floating in a thin broth. My boss told me I need to try a bite of everything at least and that was actually like chewing gristle, like the jellyfish many Chinese love so much. Super awful. I think they were basically baby turtles. That being said, apart from a few things I totally loved real authentic Chinese food on my trips there.
