As far as I understand he's a video content manager (on YouTube I presume), so (at least a part of) his job is doing stuff on YouTube. The IT guy probably saw what he was doing through like TeamViewer or something, assumed he was just slacking off and gave him a warning.
I guess the stereotype of company managers being idiots while IT guys are smart is not true.
Assuming that scenario is correct the IT guy most likely did not have a title attached to his feed. It probably only included and IP address and maybe an account name. Depending on the setup it may not even have been possible to cross reference the IP/name with a job position. Now given that it was his "first" week doing the job I think it's completely reasonable for the IT guy to not know him.
Eh fair enough but even though it's this guy's first week, doesn't mean that position didn't exist before. One guy being constantly on YouTube and one of the company's positions being a video content manager... The IT guy probably could've connected two and two together (unless there was also a bunch of people slacking off on YT) but also the company should've created some label in the system for this position.
What the company should have done doesn't mean they did. I work for a rather large corporation and the amount of things they should do is on a whole other scale versus the things they actually do. You also assume the IT guy even knows, beyond a general idea, what the company does. It's also just as likely the IT department isn't even at the physical office. I think it's more likely that the IT guy didn't even realize they had a new manager and they, unless they had a lot of problems previously, were only vaguely aware there was a video content section. You've gotta understand that for every 100 or so regular employees there may be 1 IT guy. Sometimes it's even less 300-400 to 1. Given those odds it's understandable something like this happens. Just one of those things that make a funny story for both parties.
I suppose you're right, I've always worked for smaller companies and even so the mismanagement was definitely there.
Ah, this whole situation reminds me of the show IT Crowd. How I wish they renewed it.
