The only person who matters is asking the girl. There is no reason to ask either set of parents for "permission" - you're dating the girl not them.

To me it's antiquated but if that's what people want, you just gotta do you. Personally, I don't want my partner to ask for my parents permission to marry me - I just want him to do it and have my parents know I'm making the decision because I have a brain, yeah know?

Well yeah ultimately it is your decision, but I find it so well mannered. If it is marriage well, your partnets parents will be your family too so it is nice to take them into account, and for me it is a form of chivalry.
