Dinofelis darti, which means "Terrible Cat", is an extinct genus of sabre-toothed cats belonging to the tribe Metailurini. They were widespread, living across all continents except Australia, South America, and Antarctica from around 5 million years ago to 1.2 million years ago. They were relatively large, ranging anywhere from the size of a leopard to the size of a lion, with most around the size of a jaguar. They had sabre-teeth that were more the teeth of Homotherium than Smilodon, making them scimitar-toothed cats (as opposed to dirk-toothed cats). Like other similarly-sized cats such as modern leopards and Megantereon, Dinofelis is known to have hunted hominids and primates, though their main prey were grazing animals and proboscideans. Dinofelis likely went extinct when the forests receded around the start of the last ice age.
