Fun fact I’m sure I’ve mentioned before- Football (soccer) was one of many games called football. Football was basically just a field sports game you didn’t play on a horse, not a game you played with your feet. Several types of football were popular in Britain including Rugby football. It was a tad long to say “football” after the name of each sport so people shortened the names to cut the “football” part until no game was called just “football.” Using popular naming conventions of the time- Rugby was commonly called “Rugger” and The game we know as Footvall (Soccer) was called- Soccer. America created its own football game, but at the time sports like Rugby weren’t popular. So we just called our game “Football” because it was the only type we had. Soccer was brought over and Americans called it what the British did- Soccer. The Brits basically didn’t like that so they started calling Soccer “Football” since by then they no longer referred to any singular game as “football.”
