I accidentally did this because it was dark and I stopped at a red light in a dodge area, so the guy revved back and when it was green we diced for a few seconds, but I switched to fourth instead of third so I lost.
I often directly switch from second to fourth, or third to fifth, since I tend to accelerate at quite a speed from the robot (obviously still sticking to the limit) and our town is surrounded by long, flat, open roads (80-100 km/h, and 120 km/h on the freeway).
So it's high enough revs to go to fourth/fifth, but too high for second/third, but I just pulled away so I went from first to second, and there's little point in going to third/fourth if it's heading for fourth/fifth anyway.
I rather slack down a tad (except when I'm going uphill, then I use third/fourth as gradual progression) in the switch between, than having to press clutch a million times in succession.
Basically, I'm a lazy driver.
Edit: oh, I also forgot to mention my gear lever struggles its butt off (it's a secondhand car - I'm pretty sure some of the gears are damaged, it really struggles to go into first or reverse sometimes, and third/fourth tend to struggle as well) so I might've picked up the bad habit there.

I love the implication that there is no alternative. Naturally this is true
