Twitter vs Tim Pool podcast in a nutshell. If you haven't seen the original, go watch it, it's a great commentary on current events and the internet landscape. This animation's pure gold tho.
@xvarnah
Writing this to give you an explanation of the situation with Puma since I was there when it happened.
.
So he decided to post an excerpt of an essay he wrote about 7 years ago regarding sociology, and tagged me along with guest_ and some other people. I read through the essay, left some feedback in the comments to which puma responded really well, and we had a good discussion.
funkmasterrex posted below in a separate comment, disparaging the essay in quite harsh terms. Puma responded by posting that he should either offer actual criticism or stop being a dick, citing his exchange with me as an example of a good discussion on the topic.
.
Afterwards I went to bed and didn't follow the situation. I come back today, and the post has been deleted and puma said he's leaving the website, as you saw in the chat. I didn't know what funkmasterrex exactly wrote that made him leave, so I lashed out real hard at him in chat. And then scatmandingo started shitting on puma for no reason.
You can see the result yourself.
.
I don't know what I can fucking do about this. Every single person that I cared about on this site has left over the past months, you and a few others are the only ones left. And I don't care for how long someone has been a part of funsub community, if they are ripping the site apart, they deserve no mercy.
.
shik, firmlee, puma, who knows who's gonna go next.
@vitklim I appreciate a bit more insight into it. I was wondering what the essay was about, but most people seemed to be passing over it so I wasn't certain how relevant the essay was or what it's content was.
'
What I had to say had only to do with the "kill yourself" bit, though I'm not sure if I made that clear.
'
Tbh it's hard to form an opinion about it all without actually having seen what was said in the essays. I can say I don't fully AGREE with any of their decisions.
'
Funk has been known to have dark humor, but he's usually fairly laid back (at least when I've interacted with him or seen him interacting with others), so I'm admittedly curious what could have set him off if he was genuinely going after puma in the essay.
'
Scat, I think has had some harsh words. But I also think he saw a community flipping the fuck out on someone who, as far as he could tell, hadn't stepped that far out of line. Rather than let that happen he wanted to step in and provide for insight
He was certainly very harsh at times, and I'm not going to excuse or police his actions. I'm just saying what I think the cause/effect and intent were. His intent is similar to why I got involved
'
Puma, then, I don't think may have been out of line being offended. I did say, and I do think, that if harsh words and occasional suggestions to off yourself are triggering for him than the internet will never been a safe place for him because, unfortunately, he will encounter that everywhere. Not saying he should suck it up, or anything like that. Just that it's something you have to learn to deal with because humans and anonymity can give birth to assholes the likes we normally wouldn't encounter.
'
Again without knowing what actually went down I can't say if he overreacted. I don't think he should leave the site, however, if he feels it's damaging for his mental health to be here than that has to be priority number one, for everyone, always.
Well, I figured it was because of the essay, given he deleted it, and everything seemed to trigger from whatever comment funkmasterrex left after I went to sleep. But given that the "kys" comment was left on a different post that is still up, I definitely wasn't aware that that could be the reason.
I'll leave a link to the essay, you can have a look if you want.

I think the Facebook thing you posted awhile ago is proof of that: if something in our environment is causing a toxic reaction in ourselves, then that environment likely isn't worth staying in.
'
I think funk and scat were probably over the line somewhat, but I also think labelling funk a bully and toxic and someone downvoting every comment he's ever made and calling him out is also over the line.
'
My point saying he's been part of the community wasn't really saying "length of time = quality of person," just saying he's been around all this time and he's not harassed other users as far as I can tell. There's no established pattern of behavior and he contributes, but people are very quick to burn him at the stake despite that. Admittedly it may only take one incident, but this largely seemed a misunderstanding
'
Puma did say that he and funk got things sorted out, which I'm thankful for. I'm not happy he's leaving or don't care. I didn't interact with him much so I don't know him
As for what you can do, there's honestly not much outside of what you're already doing. I've seen lots of people come and go in the last year. Sunflowers and granlobomalo were both people that I enjoyed a lot but sun got overwhelmed by the site and gran just had real life issues.
'
And it's sad. Tbh I still wonder if both of them are okay. But as with puma everyone has to do what's best for them.
'
From what I can tell you care about people, and love engaging with the ones you get on with. You contribute and try and make the site welcoming in your own way. That's all that's in your power, and it's actually a huge thing
