The offspin series of ATLA was the Legend Of Korra, Korra was tge next avatar she was born the day Aang died. Aang and Katara were married.

Aang and Katara fell in love, and because Aang is the Avatar, when he dies, a new Avatar is born. So Korra is the new avatar, and even though Katara is her teacher, on Korra's birthday, it reminds Katara of Aang's death, and it makes her very sad.
