But taking action against someone because of their ideas, beliefs, or religion—not hiring, denying entry, ruining them out of town, killing them because of their faith—that's a crime, and it should always be seen as such
Unless their beliefs involve things like stoning gay people to death and genital mutilation...Inthink we should absolutely be taking action against those ideas in action.
The freedom to analyze and criticize any idea is important. We cant legislate away being an asshole without eliminating that freedom. However- that’s a key here. What we criticize and how we do it, the way we use that freedom reflects on us. I can correct or question my boss without being an ass about it. Or- I can criticize and mock my boss because I think they are dumb. Most people don’t though- because while they are free to do so, they also know they’ll likely suffer if they do. There’s an easy test. If we wouldn’t speak a way to a person we loved, or who we knew had power over us, but we would speak that way to a person who we feel has no power to retaliate against us- we are likely being an asshole. Religion should be questioned, but looking for answers or trying to “teach” or share views is far removed from dumping on something we don’t believe in that others do to make us feel superior about ourselves. The purpose and method of criticism is an important factor.
People can't decide what race they are but they can choose to practice one or another belief.
I'm not bothered by any religion (even some are absolutely unbelievable) as long as the person who practices it for the sake of kindness.
You can follow Satan or the goddess of destruction, whatever to call it, just don't stone and sacrifice people or anything like that.
Criticizing religions tend to bring heated debate which often lead to unnecessary violence. Of course people should be free on criticizing ideas, but sometimes we need some wisdom and avoid some sensitive topics in order to live together in harmony.
I agree with the meaning of your post, but it shouldn't be made into a freedom stealing law. Basic human decentcy falls on the parents. Freedom doesn't get taken away all at once. It fades slowly a little bit at a time as laws cut away a piece here, and a piece there.
True. It’s far easier to take a right for “the greater good” than it is to give. Laws provide a framework for society, however wherever we draw the line, at some point personal accountability has to be a factor and the government act and shouldn’t be involved in every aspect and every dispute or interaction in our lives.
