I was playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo with my sister the other day and my Mum watched for a bit and said "that's a bit violent" and all I could think to say was "yeah....it's a fighting game...that's the whole point". If you don't like violence, don't play violent games like Mortal Kombat where the whole plot is to be violent and oversaturated unrealistic deaths.
If you're letting your 9 year old play Mortal Combat and complain it's "too violent", then maybe you should have bought them something else. My parents bought my Bayonetta and AC:2 when I first got my 360 (probably about 13/14, and they knew both were rated R, but they were okay with it because they knew I wasn't going to think it was realistic or something to be done. All it did was make me spend waaaay too much money on video games when I got older.
