It affects the gameplay exactly as much as any other character fluff does. By that logic all the characters in apex should be cookie cutter lookalikes similar to fortnite or pubg just with a chosen special ability set at the beginning instead of interesting looking characters with story and flavor.
Okay sounds good, it's a story less pvp battle royal. A free one at that. If you're looking for a story and to be entertained without gameplay involved you should stick to single player
its not a storyless pvp battle royal, it has a fluff, it has background, there is story behind all of it just as there is in overwatch. overwatch has a literal asston of fluff behind everything. This fluff links into in game things that happen like random voice lines when certain characters are in the same match together and such. Things that make the game simply, more. Not just shooting, not just running around doing the same thing. Immersion is important for a successful game with characters.
bland characters contribute to the blandness of the game. if the characters werent unique and werent fluffy and didnt have things about them that made them different the game would have very little differentiating it from the other battle royal games save for the fact it has a class system. It would be visually just another drop and shoot game with some fad mechanics like realm royal or that darwin project game.
