Gun laws and practices vary all over the world. It’s too much for one post. But there are often fundamental differences in how weapons are treated and viewed that can go to a deep cultural level. In some cultures- a rifle is an “accessory” of an established man- much like a watch- the prior “gentleman” wouldn’t go in public without. In many less developed or rural places rifles are tools. They are used to defend livestock, home, or self. Many countries have militias or tribal conflict. Pistols are often not part of this equation culturally. A pistol is designed to conceal easily, be portable and used in close spaces, and kill people at relatively close range.

Pistols are not very versatile. All the other useful things a gun can do pistols either don’t, or they do it poorly. An average price might be about $200 for an SKS rifle, a Glock pistol would be about $1200. Military units in the Middle East often find that it isn’t their rifles that intimidate people but their sidearms. Pistols are often used for executions- that is really what they are best at. So in many countries the rifle isn’t seen the same as it is here. In a crowded square with most men carrying rifles, you’d be lucky to get a few rounds off before being gunned down. A pistol carries a more sinister image. It’s a weapon for someone who wants to hide they have a weapon and use it quickly at close range. Pistols tend to be more regulated than rifles in most of the world for similar reasons. Your weapons of choice for murder in these scenarios are likely pistols, knives, and explosives. The rifle can kill but isn’t as good in close spaces or as stealthy.
