If you find yourself or notice someone else sending emails at 1am, it's a major warning sign. It isn't dedication to the job, it's barely controlled stress which has led to the inability to relax and insomnia. I've been there myself several times. Please tell those you know exhibiting such behavior that it ISN'T ok and that you are concerned for them. If necessary, talk to their boss. Trust me, in the long run they will appreciate it.

My boss does this. Who then do I talk to? If I reply the mail, then we do a bit of back and forth. If I don't, I feel guilty. So usually I reply after like an hour so I don't get a response until morning, but then that's a stressful hour to wait.

If it's your boss doing it it's even worse, as he/she is setting a bad example to his employees. I would have the conversation with him, but take it on a personal level first. Not as employee-employer, but as one human concerned about the other's well-being. Maybe over lunch? And you absolutely should not respond to those late emails, turn off mail notification at a certain time and just leave it. When others confirm his/her behavior it gets reinforced and you get sucked in as well...

Really this makes me so mad. I have worked with so many people who compete with other to look industrious, like everything is easy, sending late mails/texts etc. It is ok every once in a while, but health and family come first. Unfortunately, some people only learn this when it goes so far something awful happens. I ended up divorced and suicidal and have never managed to completely bounce back.
