Blue is also used in some places like parts of Japan as street lighting as well as some establishments around the globe. Not only does psychology believe blue is a color which has a subconscious “calming effect” on most people- but statistics have demonstrated a link between lower crime rates and blue lighting. While a definitive relationship hasn’t been defined- for many the fact that there seem to be results is enough to justify trying it out.

i feel like blue lighted areas are creepy, reminding me of a side alley with a solo flickering light or a subway dimly lit etc.

When I was traveling in Switzerland, I stopped off in a park with my wife and infant in a stroller. I noticed across the way there was a group shooting up (heroin, I think), and they were using over meant supplied needles. So, it seems like the Swiss are giving mixed messages.
