Well- that and more. Hobbies and interests have made a come back. From “hipsters” and the like bringing back things long thought dead and making things cool that decades ago may have gotten a person laughed out of a group like churning your own gourmet butter or weaving your own mittens. What’s more- there’s so much “cross” referencing necessary nowadays- from the eccentric details we need to research to fully understand or formulate opinions on various world affairs to researching what kind of shaker umbrella stand makes the best basis for your rustic camo home Linux server... people get around and the algorithms that do targeted ads aren’t that smart. They boil down to mostly “you looked at something so I’ll try and sell you the closest thing I have...”

Marginally smarter ones might consider your perceive age, gender, or location, maybe some more stuff too- but in the end it’s like your grandparents. You can wear the costume and have all the shirts and even ask explicitly for a “red super ranger,” but when they come to offer you a present they aren’t going to look for a “red super ranger” and don’t know what it is. They’ll connect together some random stuff like that time you made a macaroni sculpture 4 years ago and the time you mentioned hating your mom’s mugs and buy you a cup with a humanoid macaroni cartoon character on it and think it’s exactly what you’d want.
