Thanos IS a name, it originated in ancient Greece, its a shorted version of a name I'm not going to try to spell, but means "immortal". Fun fact, the Anglicized version is actually "Arthur".

Αθανάσιος/Athanasios and I'd it also kinda comes from θάνατος/thanatos that means death. So I guess he's death and immortal
