This is why you'd die if you jumped at the last second in a falling elevator.

Except a falling elevator is a non-inertial frame of reference. There's a constant acceleration force, so the reason you would die is because you couldn't possibly accelerate the elevator fast enough to cancel out your velocity in the air.
