Tapinocephalus atherstonei, meaning "Humble Head", is an extinct species of large, herbivorous dinocephalians that lived in what is now South Africa during the Mid-Permian period. Known for their massive, bony skulls and snub-nosed snouts, Tapinocephalus used their skulls as head-butting weapons sometimes against predators but usually against their own kind, possibly for territory or mates. It was a large animal for the time, measuring up to 10 feet long and weighing anywhere from 1.5 to 2 tons.
