Gigantopithecus blacki, literally meaning "Giant Ape", was an extinct species of ape that lived in what is now Southeast Asia from around 9 million years ago to around 100000 years ago, going extinct when their food sources disappeared due to climate change. As the name suggests, Gigantopithecus was very large, standing almost 10 feet tall on two legs and weighing up to 1320 pounds. Being as big as they were, fully grown individuals likely had no natural enemies as even Homo erectus and large machairodont cats could easily be intimidated into fleeing. Due to their massive weight, it is unlikely Gigantopithecus was bipedal and likely knuckle-walked like modern-day gorillas and chimpanzees, though in appearance they would've resembled their close relative, the orangutan. Originally found in China, most of their bones and teeth are ground into powder for traditional Chinese medicine which is a factor to why we know so little about it.
Blacki : black :: africanus americanus : african american.
That was the guest's "joke", but it makes no sense as they lived in China and not the Americas.
