This is exactly what I did in my test though, I said everything I was doing "I'm going to check my blind spot, put on my indicator and safely merge into the right lane". Instructors can't say you didn't do something if you literally narrate everything you're doing. They can't tell you to stop either.
I never had to have a driving instructor with me <_<. I just passed the computer exam, had my mom sign the hours, and got my license.
I'm an awesome driver. I know my lanes when highways diverge, as @famousone stated, head on a swivel, always signalling, always a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, deceptively skilled with shifting, even in an automatic (you can force gear shifts if you can manipulate the RPM). I've also driven in all kind's of conditions, off-road, rain, snow, ice, 100mph crosswind gusts...
None of that prevents what is still the largest danger: other dumbass drivers. This is why that "head on a swivel" is the most important part.
