That’s pretty much it. Even in cases of more severe depression, medications and therapy will only get a person so far. Ultimately while not everyone can simply “will themselves to be happy” as depression can prevent our very ability as humans to feel lasting or meaningful joy, or blunt that which we do feel; once some method has returned a persons mind or body to a state where they have more complete agency over their thoughts and emotions, depressed or merely unhappy alike will have to steward their own thoughts and feelings. A cycle of thoughts, words, and actions feed each other and off each other. Speaking positive enforces thinking positive and vice versa. Positive actions encourage positive thoughts and words. Thinking positive naturally leads to positive words and deeds- and positive words and deeds tend to help our chances of positive interactions and receptions by the world...

... which in turn reinforces positive thoughts. In cases of mild depression it can be enough despite the significant effort involved to simply exercise self care, hygiene, grooming, self investment and enrichment. Through practicing these actions we reinforce our self worth to both ourselves and the world which influences how we treat ourselves and how the world treats us.

Likewise- more negative or destructive words and deeds or thoughts may seem to bring some degree of relief of but for a short while- but the consequences and risks of these tend to be negative. While anyone- even someone rich and loved who needs want nothing- can get depressed or sad- it does tend to be much harder to pull out and stay out of a funk when you have less going for you and more stacked against you. So the social reactions, financial, health and beauty, legal and other complications of destructive or negative behaviors coupled with the inherent lack of self value in them can really make it harder to think positive and feel good. Be kind to yourself and try to put into the world good, and with a little luck others will be kind to you and the world will return good your way.

And always, there’s no shame and no reason against seeking help of you are unhappy or depressed. These emotions can make seeking help harder, but possible and easy aren’t the same and it IS possible for anyone to be happy.
