If my players critically fail a roll on a intelligence check, their character comes up with an idea that is absolutely terrible and possibly dangerous. It's a good time.

The best response to a flat 1 roll I've seen was when the party was asked a riddle by a wandering cult and had to answer correctly or be banished to another realm. Everyone rolled a 1 and the DMs response was "The fiendish cult members cackle at the stupidity of your entire group and leave you alone. Being that stupid is it's own punishment and you're already suffering."
