I lock eyes with the driver. If they hit me, the last thing they see before the crunch is the disapproving look in my eyes.

Lifehack to avoid this situation, cross when it's safe, not when you feel like it. If preschoolers can do it, so can you.

I think what the post refers to is when you're crossing and a car comes from like 50m away and only breaks the last 3 meters.
