Not every company. I have never worked at an adult daycare before so we don’t get snacks and catered meals and one one one meetings about our feelings or team building get aways or commuter expenses or in office massages gym, yoga, etc. my partner works for these kinds of companies. My deal with my work is that I come in, I do a job, I get paid, I go home. They don’t bother me unless it’s an emergency. I tell them ahead if I want vacation and they tell me ahead of I’ll need to do work on vacation if they can. They know it’s stressful. That’s why I get paid as much as an entire McDonalds shift. I take that money and part of it goes to managing my stress and getting myself to work so I can make more money. We have a vending machine. Bring food or bring quarters if you plan to eat at work. They figure as an adult- my life is my business and their business isn’t my life. It works well for us.

A common complaint I get from those at the spa and work center is that they want more pay. My partner works these sorts of jobs in giant glass buildings on prime down town real estate vs. me in my non descript swamp fortress. She one said to me “all these jobs in my field pay terrible...” I pointed out that all those jobs offer- when added up, an additional $20k a year in “perks” and that that’s where the missing money in her check was going. That and to rent for that lovely office space. To each their own. I expect to work at work. And I expect that will sometimes be hard and maybe hurt my feelings a little. So I also expect them to drive a dump truck full of money up to my door to keep me working there while I enjoy all the things that money buys when I’m not at work. I don’t want to go out with my coworkers. Many? I don’t know their names. I don’t care. I come in, I do what needs done by me and make sure everyone else does what they need so my shit is locked up, and that’s it.

Its not fun or exciting or glamorous and that my friends- is why they call it “work” and not “relaxed happy fun time.” Why it’s called an office and not “a safe friendly magic fairy castle.” And why they are called “coworkers” and not “friends” or even “Person I wouldn’t ignore if they tried to speak to me and I wasn’t being paid to listen.”

Tl:dr- get in, get it done, get paid. The last one is the most important. Use the money to buy things to help increase your happiness and to cope with the fact work is... work. Live your life out of the office and do your work in the office. You’re responsible for your well being so find what balance works for you. Some can “have it all” but most people need to compromise. A great job and a shit life doesn’t sound as appealing or realistic as a shit job and a great life. Best of luck.
