The principal of manners is that the person not paying the bill does not look at the bill. That’s generally good advice. In the past- it was a man who paid the bill- that dates back to when women more or less were legally not employed or under employed. In 2019 anyone can pay the bill- and if you aren’t paying all or some portion you probably shouldn’t look- just thank the person for the meal because they wouldn’t pay if they couldn’t afford it, and it’s a gift. We don’t ask the price of gifts.
