I think to show something heroic and positive a member of a minority group that has very negative stereotypes has done, is great. It is scientifically the best way to combat negative stereotypes (I study psy).
It seems callous to call him an ex-con, and sure, they should use his name as well, but studies have proven time and time again that the best way for people to overcome prejudice is to see multiple members of the negatively viewed minority doing positive things. For this to work you still need to name the negatively viewed minority they are a part of if it is not obvious by looking at them.
