Megalochelys atlas, roughly translating to "Large Shell", was an extinct species of giant cryptodiran tortoise that lived in Southeastern Asia and Indonesia during the Miocene and Pleistocene epochs. In terms of tortoises, Megalochelys had no equals: measuring up to 9 feet long, standing up to 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighing over 2 tons, only the Cretaceous-era Archelon and Protostega as well as the contemporary giant side-necked turtle Stupendemys were larger. Given that it was related to the modern Galápagos tortoise and had much of the same anatomy, it likely had a similarly herbivorous diet. Megalochelys likely had no predators until humans came along.
