i dont think there was a magical fruit that could destroy people at the will of the holder in irl [insert any one of the early games' locations.] The idea of the game series is to have the mundane elements an acceptable level of accurate (tech level of the civilization in focus, general look of the world space) and all the magical shit is free rein. Thats how a good fantasy/sci-fi setting works. It's believable in real life aspects and fantastic stuff looks cool and usually follows its own set of rules and a good setting doesnt break its own new rules. Verisimilitude is a key part of a good story/game/world/movie/book/etc.
