The original comic, like most Disney tales, is much darker than the movie. Main points of interest:
.
-Gepetto gets arrested
-Pinocchio burns his own feet off (by accident)
-A cricket tries to warn Pinocchio about bad behaviour, so Pinocchio throws a hammer at it and kills it (RIP, Jimminy, though his ghost does come back later)
-A bird meets a similar fate when it tries to warn Pinocchio about a cat and a fox trying to trick him. The cat eats the bird, and later the cat and fox disguise themselves as bandits and hang Pinocchio from a tree. It takes so long for him to suffocate they get bored and leave.
-a rather confusing resurrection occurs afterwards due to fans wanting more of the comic. A fairy and several animals are involved, and the Cricket's ghost assures them all Pinocchio is not dead. Cricket ghosts are the highest authority on puppet deaths, so I'm told.
-Pinocchio winds up in a weasel trap (post-resurrection)
-Gepetto gets eaten
-pinocchio is caught by a fisherman who wants to eat him
-pinocchio is turned into a donkey, along with his friend, for playing too much. He is then bought by a circus and forced to do tricks until he injures his leg. He is then sold to a man who drowns him in the ocean, with the intent of skinning him. The fish eat the flesh off pinocchio's donkey-corpse and somehow this turns him into a puppet again.
-he later encounters his donkey friend nearly worked to death on a farm
.
There's some other shenanigans, none of which are overly pleasant. But overall leaves you with the impression maybe the creator wasn't overly fond of children. Or puppets. Or crickets. Or donkeys. Or cats and foxes. Doesn't seem to mind goats, though, so we have that
