I mean, “dumbed down” and “specialized” aren’t the same thing. Physicists, Engineers, mathematicians- all might be overseeing work representing millions or billions of dollars and years, decades, or more in human time. But... for the average person you are much more likely to notice it and be effected if an engineer screws up. Physicists don’t generally build bridges or airplanes. Long before the ideas and potential mistakes of a physicist get to the public they’ve usually been been vetted and proven and worked out- so most of the time a mistake by a physicist will be far away, beyond most peoples notice, and of no direct consequence.

... except nuclear and some particle physicists. Those guys still have a lower death toll than engineers, but their “tiny mistakes” tend to be much bigger. Mathematicians... Wizards. No one knows if they made a mistake except the guild. Who checks their math? God and other mathematicians. Even if they make a mistake and tell you it’s right you have to take their word- and hell- a great deal of the time them NOT making a mistake has worse consequences for you than them making a mistake. Black magic of the darkest sort. Stay away. Math you can’t touch is dangerous. You’ve been warned.
