What my friends and I do is that since the backseat is usually the least comfortable place, they get to be DJ, and to pass DJ rights to whoever they see fit (they also have the right to take DJ rights back)

If I'm driving, I'm in charge of the radio. If it's my car, I'm in charge. I may temporarily relinquish direct control, but these rules are nonnegotiable.

Those are just DJ requests of the driver, which take precedence of all other requests. With a good shotgun DJ you shouldn't need that though.
