I don’t have a problem with in game “preorder bonuses” in general. Single player games are simpler than multiplayer since whatever you do in your game doesn’t effect others, and any “early game” advantage you get doesn’t allow you to “own” multiplayer early launch. So long as the item is something that players can get through regular game progression later on without pre order it’s just a little “bonus” and not something that you can never get if you miss it. I’m also marginally ok with the idea that it be an item that costs money from the game store provided it doesn’t cost a huge amount. If you think about it- that’s just a “sale” where you don’t save. If I give you a $5 skin or whatever for pre ordering- that’s just $5 off the game basically- but I still keep your $5. Lol.

I don’t like when they do “exclusives” for pre order. Things that if you didn’t pre order you can never get. That also means that future players when the game is old or “retro” wont be able to get it either. BUT- then again is that so bad? Games do that ALL the time. Special items or skins, paint jobs etc for people who compete in tournaments, people who log in during a holiday or promotion etc. How is it different? If you couldn’t afford to, were busy, didn’t hear about it etc. you miss out and IF it’s transferable can only get it from someone trading it who was there.

I suppose one critical difference is that when you preorder you don’t actually know if the game is good yet. But isn’t that how most things work? Early adopters take on the risks and tend to either profit from that or take the hit if it was a bad move. But... I still don’t like the idea of “exclusives” in games that can’t be gained by players who started playing later or weren’t able to catch the exclusive- I can’t really justify WHY I don’t. If target has a sale and I miss it I can’t really say much. If NECA produces 10,000 of a figure and I miss it that’s on me.... but I still don’t like it- and I guess it’s because in the case of digital assets there’s no reason for it to be “exclusive” beyond creating artificial demand.
