I'm thinking of a mundane world, suddenly invaded by a magical one. The mundane soldiers fight desperately against the onslaught of beasts, monsters, gods, and champions, but are forced again and again to retreat, fall back, and leave people behind just to delay the rising tide.
Eventually the mundanes are forced to one final stronghold, that is falling just like the rest.
But the invaders did not realize that introducing magic to a new world would allow people of this world to call on it's forces. Unfortunately, the mundanes did not know this either.
The defenders are all dead or dying, so the Champions break down their fortress walls to a heartwrenching sight. A lone combat medic, hardly more than just a girl, is desperately trying to save one of the few soldiers who isn't outright dead.
But it's hopeless. The Knight walks forward, stepping over the Medic's long forgotten rifle, intent on sending her to rest with her comrades. He reaches her just as her friend dies. He raises his holy blade just as she turns to look him in the eye. He freezes, for underneath the mud, blood, and tears, there is only profound fear in her eyes. Unholy black and orange energies coalesce around her, forcing the Knight back. She rises to her feet, and then is lifted from the ground by the power. A single plea, to gods unknown to them, is whispered from her lips, but the invaders hear it as though she whispered into their very souls.
"Please don't leave me."
The dark energies disperse, and she falls to her knees.
Thinking the episode is over, the Knight goes to step over the bodies to finish her off, only for a corpse to latch onto his leg. And another. Raspy whispers reassuring the medic fill the air, accompanied by the terrible sounds of broken and twisted bodies rising from the dirt.
I'm sorry to say that I don't. Inspiration strikes at the weirdest times, so much of my writing is left in unassuming comment sections. Any critiques or comments?
