I don’t know who the dumb person is here? Is it supposed to be the guy making the excuse, or the guy completely oversimplifying success and overlooking the fact that most of those companies started in a garage by someone upper/upper middle class with connections and advantages, often with millions of dollars in seed money from their families. Wait. There’s more.

Many of these “garage companies” were tax payer subsidies. The whole “Silicon Valley garage tech” myth starts in WW2 when professors and the like are given defense contracts to create technology and experiment- and use their garages to save money on their “side businesses.” The “Apple garage” was a garage. Mostly people hung out there. Wozniak and others in the company had experience in tech at big names like HP. The garage wasn’t their office. They’d do design works and other things off site and then maybe do a test assembly in the garage before driving off to sell it. Don’t believe me? You don’t have to Steve Wozniak has been very clear about this in past interviews and accounts.

Most of the “garage founders” had previous experience and were connected in the industry. Most already were someone- not “world famous” but established and desirable workers with skill in their field. Most also had money, and most didn’t use their garages etc. as one might an office but just as a place to get started before they expanded.

So I’m not sure who is supposed to be dumb because the first guy seem ignorant and the guy replying seems like he’s being clever or cheeky. The second guy could be said to be “making an excuse” but the first guys argument makes him sound like the sort who would always have an excuse for why any logical reasoning would be rejected for some sort of absolute determinism.
