Not all retail is created equal. We often say it as a pejorative- the US national average for a pharmacist is about $110k a year- which many major chains are in line with. The average pay for doctors is much higher- but one also has to remember those numbers are skewed because some specialists make VERY large salaries while general practitioners might fair 30-50% better than a pharmacist- but have risks and fees like malpractice and other costs of their trade that can reduce their effective salary- and doctors generally carry a higher liability in the trade.

An auto technician will often have as many years of formal training as a doctor- tool boxes can easily cost upwards of $25k and mechanics generally provide their own tools which often cost well over 6 figures- plus continued education to keep up with technology and new models- and auto mechanics of that caliber generally make less than $100k a year and have physically and often mentally demanding jobs.

Sticking to the medical field- nurses can easily have close to a doctors schooling and knowledge- and often much more experience with procedural work and patient care- and. Nurse practitioner is in effect- a doctor without the title and some of the abilities- and of course- the pay.

But ultimately these are all very different careers- even those in the healthcare field. A nurse for example can start out with relatively little cost and schooling at the “bottom” of nursing and while working- get additional education and experience and get certification in various specialties and add levels through LVN and RN and NP- or parlay their experience and education into other medical jobs like imaging technician etc.

Nurses can have more flexibility changing their specialty as well- psychiatric or critical care or neonatal or whatever else than a doctor generally can. The schedule, the workflow, the pay, many intangibles and the things one faces daily as far as ones mental state are different in each of these jobs as are the paths that generally lead to them. So the pharmacist might work at the same retail store as a 17 year old kid- but they probably get paid decent, are a skilled professional, and hey- they have a pretty fixed schedule and can pick up groceries on lunch or after work!
