To be fair- even if I do think many modern sports stars and athletes are pampered cry babies- you’re talking about the difference between a Ferrari and an old Toyota many times. Modern athletes often push the limits of performance (within the scope of their sports) and just about every aspect of their training and lives is designed to give them any and all advantage on the field. There’s a reason you see lots of old Toyota trucks being used by militias in harsh environments but not racing with Ferrari’s on paved tracks. Precision often costs durability. That old Toyota can run forever and take in handfuls of sand but a single grain in the precision engine of the Ferrari can destroy it or ruin its performance.

The last thing I’ll say- and this is also a word of advice for the young? Just because you CAN doesn’t mean you should. That bad knee or back that you can still get away beating on when you’re young? Beat on it enough and when you get old- it will hurt all the time- maybe even stop working. For a sports star who wants to live life off the field too- who wants to retire someday and do something else- who doesn’t want to spend their life after sports as a crippled, in pain, punchy minded mess who maybe can’t see straight or whatever else- being cautious and being kind to your body makes sense from their perspective. If you die on the field- even for a championship- what’s the point? Your life is over. No hugging the wife or kids again. For what? A cool story you aren’t around to enjoy?

Now- sports stars back in the day didn’t make the salaries they do today. Sometimes they barely made enough to get to the game. Life was harder all around and more dangerous and these guys usually didn’t have many other options. Today- you’re 22,30- making millions a year. You might hang in and retire at 40. You have 30,50 years and likely tens or hundreds of millions- possibilities to make more through endorsements and products, training people, speaking, acting- you want to duck yourself up for life over a single game? What game is worth it? You lose this year, you come back next year. You sustain a decades or lifelong injury this year... that’s gonna be with you and you aren’t going to play as well when you get back- if you get back.
