Not true. Partially true. In the US- only the CDC is equipped to test for COVID-9. In other words- you can’t go to your doctor or local ER and and just get a test. The bill in this story wasn’t for a Corona virus test- it was for a hospital stay with CT scan and blood work.

So the true part is that a guy did think he might have the virus and the bill without insurance would have been $3k- the untrue part is in the misleading phrasing- he didn’t get tested for Corona Virus and he went to the hospital for more than just a “Corona virus test.”

The medical system is a mess- but it also isn’t fair or apt to compare by knowing how to use your healthcare plan, or being smart with healthcare- to healthcare mismanagement. Even social healthcare has “rules.” Of you go to a doctor, explain your symptoms, and the doctor recommends certain treatment or testing- that isn’t the same as walking into a hospital and saying “check me in I think I might be sick.”

Healthcare isn’t Amazon- doctors don’t usually order labs unless they think you need labs. You can have amazing insurance or full social healthcare but you still can’t walk into a hospital, say “I want an MRI...” and walk out for free if your doctor says “I don’t think you need an mri..” healthcare coverage does cover PRUDENT preventative care- but it isn’t prudent to just let you order medical supplies and tests because in your opinion it’s warranted.
