UPS shouldn’t have done that. But- because people do things they shouldn’t and because... well... fires and junk... I recommend doing a couple things based on this opportunity to learn. 1. If at all possible work out a way out of your home that doesn’t use the front door. If you have a suitable window and aren’t ground floor for example- consider a foldable escape ladder.
2. Install or get the land lord to install different door knobs. With handle type knobs like that- bare minimum you want them to be able to turn clockwise or counter clockwise to work, optimally you want the type that the inner and outer handles can turn independent of each other and still work if one is being held. As suck as that was- it would suck more if something jammed the handle in an emergency that required you to leave the building- or at a critical moment where waiting to be let out wasn’t just an inconvenience- but you NEEDED to be somewhere or it was really important you be somewhere and couldn’t wait.
They do make exterior deadbolts. Usually these have an input pad or similar, and the knob is there because there is not a motorized mechanism to open the bolt, or should it or the power failure- usually there is also a key hole in addition to the input pad.
