Not saying there isn’t any truth or wisdom to this- but I am saying that before we can ask other people to be decent we have to do it ourselves right? What’s a common reason to charge for parking? To discourage driving or encourage ride sharing. This is a common aspect of urban planning- many major cities for example restrict the number of parking spaces that can be added to buildings under the theory that if it is harder to find parking- less people will drive alone.

So almost certainly hospitals and schools should have free parking- or at the least parking that doesn’t generate profit but only charges enough to cover any costs associated with running the lot and keeping things safe and usable. BUT- it’s also on us to not drive to these locations as a simple matter of convenience or laziness- to ride share and carpool and use alternative transportation.

It’s a two way street. If only people who needed to drive did so, if when people drove they did so in the most optimum way for the whole of community and society- we’d have way less people having issues right? There’d be far less need for methods and programs to penalize “thoughtless” or “unnecessary” commuters- and well- the ratio in probably for every 1 kid with a handicap or other very compelling reason to need to drive to school- there are 5 who it’s just the most convenient way. You’re profiting off the 5 and the innocent one suffers. If it were 5 in need to drive to 1 not wanting to drive- the case is easier to sell that it’s profiteering off the needy.

It's annoying that I have to pay £500 for the parking at the campus I live on
