I thought that Frodo was in his fifties when shit happened. Try to picture Tom Hanks running across Middle Earth from the Shire to Mordor and back again instead of Elijah Wood.
Frodo was 50 when he left Hobbitton. He just turned 33 when the movie and book began. Because Frodo and Bilbo have the same birthday and if Bilbo was 131 at the end of the movie (and book) and 111 at the beginning, the entire book spans a length of 20 years (131-111=20). Another fact: Tolkien intended the Lord of the Rings to be published as a single book but it was too long for most people so it was published in three separate pieces.
