When I was planning my wedding I was really surprised that a pay bar is considered so rude in the US and lots of websites suggested it was more polite to have a completely alcohol free wedding than to give people the option to buy their own drinks. Open bars at weddings in the UK are really rare, you get drinks throughout the day after the ceremony, with the meal and for the toasts but after that you buy your own drinks at the bar.

I couldn't afford a fancy wedding but the 3 most haves for me were an open bar, good mjsic, and sit down dinner (no buffet),. Yes, they are considered rude in the US, but also I eat, drink, and dance at weddings as much as I can! And I don't want to get up. Serve me food! Lol So, if I appreciate and have taken advantage of that in other weddings it's only fair and appropriate that I had them at mine. I cut costs in other things like the limo, venue, was decent but not proxey, and a lot of things for decorations were DIY. Looking back I would have been able to do my hair and maybe make up too.

Yeah I guess if it's so widespread it would seem mean not to offer it yourself, it's just not considered the same way here. If you didn't get a drink at all then that would be odd but as it is you get probably the equivalent of nearly a whole bottle of wine before you have to start buying your own. It's just a cost you factor in as a wedding guest.
