I dislike it in general when people act this way. Sometimes it actually is constructive to have someone figure out a problem on their own- teaching someone to fish versus giving them a fish. That said- when it comes to mistakes or carelessness- realizing a problem does not correct the cause of the problem. It takes longer of both peoples time to achieve the same result- in the case of the waiter time they may need to serve other customers or duties; and it is possible of the waiter made a mistake it may have been because they are so pressed for time and their processing so overloaded with tasks to remember that they forgot, which takin time and using more of their faculties only hurts them and other customers.
But ultimately- the goal of such an approach isn’t constructive. It is to point out a mistake someone made that is seen as stupid or incompetent, and in the process of doing make them seem more incompetent when they cannot guess their “simple mistake.” To make oneself “bigger” compared to them- which seems superfluous anyway when one is in a relationship where the other party serves them already.
There is no call to assault the dignity of service staff- society already treats these positions as ones not worthy of dignity- society looks down on servers and sees/treats the professions like they are for those with nothing of value to offer, “inferior” people who can’t do “better” than to serve others. It’s true that many people are intuitively embarrassed to say they work in retail or service, and many people will patronize or disrespect people who admit it, even when the retail/server worker rightfully sees no shame in it.
Perhaps- if you want competent, professional, high caliber service- the door to that is to begin to treat service and retail as skilled and valuable professions? To treat the workers as equals or at least equal as human beings. We all serve someone. Outside special circumstances and personal relationships most people in a professional or civil setting would t speak this way to a boss or colleague. Don’t abuse the waitstaff just to exercise your need to feel powerful over another human being.
Pretty unfunny/funny.
