Archaeoindris fontoynontii, meaning "Ancient Indri-Like Lemur" with the species name honoring Antoine Maurice Fontoynont, was an extinct giant lemur native to Madagascar during the Pleistocene epoch. It was the largest of the so-called sloth lemurs, weighing anywhere from 350lbs to 538lbs. It had a heavy, robust skull with large teeth and small eyes, though its eyesight wasn't as good as other primates and lacked trichromatic color vision. Due to wear on some of its bones, it seems Archaeoindris was at least partially arboreal and spent some of it's time in trees foraging for leaves, fruits, seeds, and nuts. Going extinct in 350 BC, it likely died out from habitat loss and hunting by the arriving humans.
