Automotive is a thankless and frustrating field at times. People who don’t know what a spark plug is or what it does will suddenly become experts on cars and what they should cost when the bill comes. Add to that the fact that the industry on the whole has gained a reputation for rip offs (largely thanks to those minorities in the field that ARE rip off artists or incompetent.) I’ve seen some shit. I’ve seen people come in for an oil change and then say that their radio stopped working right after and the mechanic must have messed something up (for non car people- while it is POSSIBLE in the most extreme and insane cases- that’s like getting a doctor to check your blood pressure, then finding out you have a bad liver the next day and blaming them/expecting they fix it for free.)

I’ve seen people insist on bringing their own parts and then getting upset at the mechanic when the part THEY bought broke, or expecting the mechanic to warranty the part. I’ve seen people bring in barely running $500 cars that had been to 97 cheap mechanics and backyard mechanics- needing something like an engine. The person buys the engine and has a real mechanic do the work, and refuses to accept work to re seal the engine or replace something like a bad radiator that’s already on the car- and then blame the mechanic when the thing that they didn’t want to fix caused the engine to fail.

I could spend days on the takes of automotive stupidity I have seen. I feel sorry for this poor shop. Sadly- a good rule of thumb if you want to do automotive is to not do any favors and never work within someone’s budget. Only do the job 100% right and don’t make any special thing of helping them with their other problems. It’s shitty- but this is the kind of thing that happens. The moment you touch the car of a person who is in a mess- you are likely to get mess on you.
